All that is needed to get started is an idea of what the item is, with a specification or similar. An indication of how many you are looking for, and a target price.
Typically total spend needs to be £4,000 or more for a factory to be interested, though the best price is always related to volume. There are a number of shipping options from air freight to FCL (full container loads).
Below we’ll tell you what we expect to find out about the specification, purchase volumes and target price.
The more details, and the more accurate they are the better. Try not to leave any detail to assumption, even down to how you want the product packaged and shipped.
What is the item? What are its defining points? If possible, an accompanying drawing showing details would be even better.
What is it made of, are there any grades relevant or does something else come with it? Because it is standard to you, does not mean we will be as familiar with it.
Remember we do not go to China because we want to buy from there, we go there because of value. If they already provide an item of quality suitable to the African market and we do not detail well enough, then we can find the item that was asked for, but not what was meant and certainly not ideal for the UK market.
We cannot stress enough how important this aspect is – good Specification is key.
How many will you buy? It’s easy to say “it depends upon the price” but actually it doesn’t.
Clients know how many they want or can afford, the better price will just give you a better chance of ordering or bringing forward the repeat order time, and a larger second order.
So how many are you thinking of, and what re-order frequency is probable?
If you are not going to make a reasonable saving on production costs, then it doesn’t make sense to go ahead, however, hoping to pay 10% of UK production costs is probably unrealistic too.
Keeping expectations at a more realistic level helps us to determine if we are finding the right supplier, and also gives us the ability to refine prices appropriately without coming back with unsuitable information.
As you can see, we are keen to know as much information as we can in order to do our job well, and offer as professional a service as possible.
As we are doing all the preliminary work at no cost to you, we want to ensure we do the best job possible as efficiently as possible, including testing the supplier to ensure we are getting the right offer.
Unsurprisingly, if we are asked to spend a lot of time looking into a project with no solid details, no idea on pricing, but we know what they mean, that project will not have a high priority.
